JAMB Addresses Misconceptions Regarding Current University Students and UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially debunked rumors claiming that currently enrolled university students are barred from participating in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a statement released by the Public Communication Adviser, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Board clarified that it is perfectly legal for a student already in a tertiary institution to apply for the UTME or Direct Entry (DE). However, this comes with a critical condition: mandatory disclosure.
Key Guidelines for Matriculated Candidates:
- Mandatory Status Update: Candidates must state their current matriculation status during the registration process.
- Single Admission Policy: Nigerian law prohibits holding two admissions simultaneously. Once a student accepts a new admission via UTME/DE, their previous admission is automatically terminated.
- System Detection: JAMB’s database can identify existing matriculation records. Failure to disclose this information is considered a regulatory offense.
- Consequences of Non-Disclosure: Students who hide their current status risk the immediate forfeiture of both their old and new admissions.
The Board also noted that mandatory disclosure helps identify “professional examination writers” who are already students but sit for exams on behalf of others. JAMB warned the public to ignore “social media education advocates” who spread misinformation and instead rely on official JAMB publications for accurate registration guidelines.
