What is Neco?
WAEC (West African Examinations Council) administers senior secondary school exams, including the WASSCE in May and June and the GCE in November and December, across Nigeria, Ghana, and Gambia. NECO (National Examinations Council) is a Nigerian board that offers an alternative, conducting the SSCE for current students in June and July and an external SSCE in November and December.
What is SSCE?
The Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) is the final exam for Nigerian secondary school students and is essential for obtaining the senior secondary school certificate and gaining admission to Nigerian higher education institutions. It is conducted by WAEC and NECO, with students choosing to take either or both exams.
What are the differences between the WAEC and NECO exams?
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) conducts the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. WAEC offers two exams in Nigeria: the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for final-year students, held in May and June, and the General Certificate Examination (GCE) for private candidates, held in November and December.
The National Examination Council (NECO) is Nigeria’s alternative to WAEC, conducting two SSCE exams within Nigeria: the NECO SSCE for current students in June and July, and an external SSCE, equivalent to the GCE, in November and December.
Who is qualified to sit the NECO?
NECO’s SSCE is for SS3 students and is the final examination required for awarding the secondary school certificate after six years of schooling.
About NECO
The National Examinations Council (NECO) was established in April 1999 in response to growing demands for a national examination body to better address Nigerian needs and manage the increasing number of Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) candidates. This decision followed a series of panels addressing similar issues.
The roots of the problem trace back to 1977 during the Murtala/Obasanjo administration, when widespread leakage of West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) questions prompted the Federal Government to create the Sogbetun Commission.
The commission found that WAEC’s workload was too great for it to manage effectively and recommended the creation of additional examination bodies. However, this recommendation was not acted upon until the establishment of NECO.
The National Examination Council (NECO) announces that registration for the 2025/2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External is now open. Registration cards are available at all NECO State offices. The exams will take place from May, to june, 2025. The SSCE includes both internal (for current students) and external (for non-school candidates) categories.
Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal
The SSCE Internal is for final-year Senior Secondary School students. It includes 76 subjects, with candidates required to take 4 compulsory subjects, 3-4 subjects from their specialization, and 1 elective outside their field, totaling a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 9 subjects.
Schools must first register candidates offline before paying registration fees on the NECO portal (www.neco.gov.ng) and uploading candidate data. A minimum of 20 candidates is required for registration; fewer than 20 is considered unviable.
Since 2019, registration cards are no longer used. Schools must submit a candidate list to the NECO state office for validation, after which they receive a quota and pay online through NECO TSA. Once payment is confirmed, candidates’ data can be uploaded and exam numbers will be generated.
Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External
The SSCE is the final examination for secondary school students, with two categories: SSCE Internal for students in their final year, and SSCE External for private candidates not in the school system.
Neco Results 2025/2026
The NECO Results online system (www.results.neco.gov.ng) provides an easy way to check SSCE, BECE, and NCEE results. Tokens are required for accessing SSCE and BECE results but are not needed for common entrance results. Tokens can be shared with anyone who needs to view the results.
